Barley Mak has been training primary and secondary English language teachers at the undergraduate and postgraduate levels in Hong Kong and New Zealand for many years. The undergraduate and postgraduate courses she has taught include English Language Teaching methodology, language testing and assessment, professional development of English language teachers, psycholinguistics, research methodology, and English for specific purposes. She is the founding Programme Director of the M.A. in English Language Teaching. Her publications have appeared in internationally referred journals, for example, Asia-Pacific Education Researcher, Asia Pacific Education Review, Educational Review, English Language Teaching Journal, Language Testing and System.
Barley Mak is the founding Director of the Centre for Enhancing English Learning and Teaching (CEELT), which operates a number of research and development projects, among which are the Writing for Integrated Teacher Education Project (WrITE) and the Support Measures for Invigorating the Learning of English (SMILE) Project. She has conducted various public-funded research projects (for example, Worldwide Universities Network Research Development Fund; Foreign Institute of Higher Education, United Kingdom; the Quality Education Fund; the Language Fund; Hong Kong Education Bureau funding; Hong Kong Education City funding). She has secured over HK$60 million (equivalent to about US$8 million) external competitive funding for her research projects. She has also been awarded internal funding amounting to over half a million HK$ (over US$75,000). Barley Mak is the principal investigator of the New Senior Secondary Curriculum Implementation Studies 2011 and 2012/13 and the Curriculum Surveys on Primary Education 2011 and 2015 commissioned by the Hong Kong SAR Education Bureau; and the Quality Education Fund Thematic Network (QTN) on English Language (Primary) 2013/14 (focusing on Reading), 2014/15 (focusing on Phonics), and 2015/16 (focusing on E-learning),as well as the Consultancy Service for the Consolidation and Redevelopment Work on Quality Education Fund (QEF) English Language (Primary) Projects commissioned by the Quality Education Fund, Hong Kong SAR Government. Some other research projects she is working on are Writing Proficiency of Pre-Service ESL Teachers and Their Assessments of Student Scripts: An Exploratory Study in Hong Kong; Second Language(s) Learning Motivation and Identity Construction of Ethnic Minority Students in Hong Kong: A Multi-Level Investigation; and A Decade on from the Inception of LPATE in 2001: Can We Determine Whether Teacher Language Standards Have Improved; all funded by the Hong Kong RGC General Research Fund.
Barley Mak has served on a number of prominent HKSAR teacher education committees, for example, the Task Force on Language Benchmark Training Arrangements (English) of the Advisory Committee on Teacher Education and Qualifications; the Working Group on Implementing SCOLAR Recommendations on Qualifications and Training (Administrative Arrangements); the Quality Mechanism Committee on Language Benchmark Training Courses (English); the Refined English Enhancement Scheme, Expert Committee; Focus Group (English Language) for the Development of Depository of Curriculum-based Learning and Teaching Resources; and various committees for the Chief Executive's Award for Teaching Excellence. She is currently a Member of the Vetting Committee on Language Degree Qualifications for Meeting SCOLAR Requirements.
